Morton Goldfein, of counsel to the firm, has practiced real estate and environmental law for more than 40 years.
Over the past dozen years, Mort has devoted much time and his considerable expertise to non-profit redevelopment activities in Newark, NJ (his birthplace) and New York City (his current residence). He created a 102-unit transitional housing facility for homeless families (the state's first) in the late 1980's that remains a regional model. He established a statewide pool of bank investment that financed hundreds of units of subsidized affordable housing through the sale of $30 million of Low Income Housing Tax Credits and acquired a large, former industrial dairy building out of a complex bankruptcy which later became a manufacturing plant for modular housing components. He also has represented non-profit groups that have created 9 charter schools in New Jersey and New York.
Mort represents diverse interests, including developers of residential, commercial and industrial properties, solar energy facilities, purchasers of single-family, co-op and condominium homes and lenders, landlords and tenants. He also has arbitrated numerous matters involving real estate partnerships, leases and contracts.
Professional History
While serving as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for the region's largest real estate developer, Mort was responsible for the acquisition, land use permitting, financing and documentation of 20 million square feet of industrial, office, retail and residential projects, including waterfront and meadowlands mixed-use communities like Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken and Harmon Meadow in Secaucus.
As counsel to the 2005 campaign of NJ Governor Jon S. Corzine, he dealt with a variety of issues, including campaign finance and reporting, voting registration and ballot issues and pay-to-play regulations.
At the invitation of the State Economic Commission, in 1985 he led the first delegation of American development professionals to the People’s Republic of China.
Mort also served as Chief of the Environmental Protection Section in the NJ Division of Law, and in 1976 authored the first text on New Jersey environmental practice for the NJ Institute of Continuing Legal Education.
