US Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently published a rule that makes changes to the Form I-9. All U.S. employers are responsible for completion and retention of Form I-9 for each individual they hire for employment in the United States, which includes citizens and non-citizens. The revised Form I-9 must be used starting April 3, 2009. Among other changes, the new form:
- Requires that all documents presented during the verification process be unexpired.
- Eliminates List A identity and employment authorization documentation Forms I-688, I-688A and I-688B (Temporary Resident Card and outdated Employment Authorization Cards)
- Adds foreign passports containing certain machine-readable immigrant visas to List A
