On Friday, May 5th, Saiber Associate Gianna Riccoboni served as an attorney advisor to the Essex Vicinage Law Day Mock Trial Program hosted by the Superior Court of New Jersey. This year’s program was held at multiple schools throughout Essex County. Gianna was placed at University Middle School in Irvington where approximately eighteen (18) 7th graders, serving as jurors, attorneys, witnesses, counsel, and other court personnel conducted a comprehensive mock trial, for all their peers, from start to finish. The students analyzed and argued a fact pattern surrounding the right to free speech in school which presented similar facts to the case of Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, 393 U.S. 503 (1969). Gianna provided assistance to the plaintiffs in the case, answering procedural questions and providing insight into the trial process. The students were prepared, excited, and took the mock trial very seriously.
Each year, the Superior Court of New Jersey - Essex Vicinage organizes its annual Law Day Celebration and Mock Trial Program. This annual program was initiated in 1997 and typically takes place during the first week in May. The Law Day program was developed and implemented by the Essex Law Day Committee composed of judges and staff as well as representatives from the New Jersey State Bar Foundation and the Essex County Bar Association.
